How To Babysit A Grandad by Jean Regan

This wonderful and charming book by Jean Regan is all about the bond between grandchild and grandad when it’s babysitting time! Although this book may seem like a tale of an adult babysitting a child, the quirky story is all about children babysitting their grandparents with giggles and laughs along the way. How To Babysit A Grandad was a book that Rachael Sheehan from the blog Lukeosaurus and Me recommended to us. She explained more about the book and why she recommends it:

“One of our favourite books about grandparents is called How To Babysit A Grandad (there’s also a version called How To Babysit A Grandma), by Jean Regan. It’s a charming and light-hearted story that explores the relationship between a child and their Grandad – and it will have you grinning from ear to ear! The book is full of useful, if not slightly cheeky, tips for children to follow when babysitting their Grandad. Tips include things such as how to stay quiet, how to prepare yummy snacks (like ice cream sandwiches!), and how to keep a Grandad entertained. The story does an amazing job of showing just how special a relationship between a child and their grandparent is and is beloved by both generations. How To Babysit A Grandad is definitely a book that I would recommend to any parent looking for books about grandparents to share with their child.”

Under The Cherry Tree by Eleanor Fletcher

Under The Cherry Tree by Eleanor Fletcher is a story with learning and meaning behind it. The book tells the story of love and bonds between grandparents and grandchildren, but also it starts to help children understand loss and the passing of a loved one. Although this story covers some more serious topics, it is still a wonderful explanation of love and friendship. Under The Cherry Tree was a book that Sarah from the blog Boo, Roo and Tigger Too recommended to us.

“A truly beautiful story that takes you on a journey through the planting of the cherry tree at the bottom of the garden and the start of a grandparent/grandchild relationship. Through the years in which they both grow and change. Before delicately covering the loss of a grandparent and how the cherry tree is a reminder of their love and friendship across the years.”

Spot Visits His Grandparents by Eric Hill

A classic flap book, Spot Visits His Grandparents is a wonderful tale by Eric Hill and is one of a great series of books that follow the life of Spot the dog. Spot loves visiting his grandparents, so join him on his adventures as he helps grandpa in the garden, causing trouble but, most importantly, having fun!

Spot Visits His Grandparents is a flap book so children can get involved in storytime, learn new skills and develop brain function, all whilst enjoying a special book before bed. If your children love the Spot books, then why not consider also reading Spot Goes To The Park, Spot Loves Bedtime, Spot Goes To The Fire Station and Spot Bakes A Cake?

Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies

Do your children love adventure books that they can immerse themselves in? Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies is a book all about Syd, who loves to visit his grandad at his house, but grandad’s house isn’t just a normal house; Syd’s granddad’s house is at the bottom of his garden, through a gate and past a tree. One day, when Syd goes to visit his grandad, he gets a shock to find that his grandad isn’t there, the two of them set sail on a journey to a beautiful and wild island, but grandad makes the big decision to stay on the island and not return home.

This touching book is all about a beautiful relationship between grandchild and grandparents and is sure to provide comfort to those who may be going through a loss or for parents wanting to teach their grandchildren about sensitive topics.

If All the World Were… by Joseph Coelho

Written by the poet and playwright Joseph Coelho, If All The World Were is a moving and lyrical book all about a young girl’s love for her grandad and how she copes when he is no longer around. Full of beautiful illustrations, this book is a powerful and uplifting notion that makes those who have lost a grandparent feel less alone.
