Are all stairlifts the same?

Although there are two broad types of stairlifts, those being straight and curved, there are literally dozens of different manufacturers and suppliers, all offering different models and features.

To make sure you are looking at a quality product from a reputable supplier, you can look for organisations such as the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) or the UK Government’s Trust Mark Scheme for independent guidance on what to look for.

Straight stairlifts

Straight stairlifts are one of the most common types of stairlifts and are often fitted to straight or steep stairs to aid ascent. If you want to purchase a stairlift and your stairs don't turn any corners, then this is a great choice for you.

Curved stairlifts

Curved stairlifts are designed to fit on curved staircases, like spiral stairs and tracks that turn a corner or have a landing. Much like straight options, curved stairlifts also come with a selection of extras, including swivel seats and safety sensors. Curved stairlift prices tend to be higher than straight stairlifts due to their bespoke nature.

Outdoor stairlifts

Outdoor stairlifts are fitted in outdoor spaces, whether that is in a garden or on steps leading up to a porch. They are there to aid people who struggle to walk long distances, especially outdoors and again come with extras like swivel seats and sensors.

How much does a stair lift cost?

The price of a stairlift depends on a number of things, such as the type of staircase you have (straight, curved, indoor, outdoor), the angle of your stairs and the space available at both the top and bottom of the stairs. Other considerations can include the height of the bulkhead on the stairs, the available width and whether or not there are any handrails or obstructions that need to be removed.

It is not just the location that will dictate the specification of a stairlift: in some cases, power-assisted features can be added to make using the lift even easier.

Running a stairlift also incurs a cost, but many of our stairlifts come with low running costs and extended warranties should they break, offering you peace of mind that you have made the right decision. Some manufacturers also install reconditioned stairlifts for those who would prefer that option.

Factors that contribute to the cost of a stair lift

  • Type of staircase (curved staircases are more expensive)
  • The length of a staircase or number of steps (longer rail = Higher cost)
  • The number of turns for curved staircase (more turns = Higher cost)
  • The presence of obstructions at the top/bottom of a staircase (may require additional features or remedial works)
  • If the stairlift is new or reconditioned
  • The warranty coverage and duration
